Stitch Patterns and Charts

Main Pattern

Chain a multiple of 3 + 1 sts. Work according to Chart 1, starting with 1 wrong-side row.

Start with the stitches before the repeat, repeat the pattern repeat continuously, and end with the stitches after the repeat.

Work rows 1–3 once, then repeat rows 2 and 3 continuously.

Note! The starting and ending stitches are calculated in the instructions as 1 pattern repeat.

Extended Stitch Border

Work in rounds according to Chart 2 along the edges of the main pattern.

Begin each round with the stated number of chain sts instead of the first stitch, and with the stitches before the repeat; repeat the pattern repeat continuously, and end with 1 slip stitch into the (top) chain that replaced the first stitch. After the 1st round, move to the start of the 2nd round with a slip stitch. The starting stitches count as 1 repeat. Work rounds 1–3 once.

Note! Always work 1 repeat of pattern 2 over 2 repeats, or approximately 2 rows, of the main pattern.

Instructions

With dark green yarn and a 4 mm hook, chain 121 sts + 3 turning chain sts and work the main pattern back and forth in rows = 3 turning chain sts + 40 repeats.

After 48.5 cm = 34 rows from the starting row, decrease for the neckline along the left edge (as seen from the right side) by 1 x 2 repeats, then * in every row decrease alternately by 1 x 1 repeat and 1 x 2 repeats; repeat from * once more, then decrease by another 3 x 1 repeat, doing this by skipping stitches with slip stitches at the beginning of the row and leaving stitches unworked at the end of the row = 29 repeats.

After 60 cm = 42 rows from the starting row, the middle of the poncho is reached. Finish the piece as a mirror image, with the decreases becoming increases.

After 120 cm = 84 rows from the starting row, finish the work.

Finishing

Fold the poncho in half with right sides together, matching the starting row and the bound-off edge. Sew a seam from the starting row/bound-off edge up to the neckline. Work the entire lower edge with 5 cm = 3 rounds of extended stitch border, placing 20 repeats along the starting row and bound-off edge, and 40 repeats along the long side edge.
