Pattern instructions for the Crochet Jacket with Ties

Sizes

36/38

You Will Need

  • Yarn 1 (50% cotton, 50% polyacrylic; 80 m/50 g), heathered blue-violet – 500 g
  • Yarn 2 (78% cotton, 22% polyester; 100 m/50 g), pale blue – 100 g
  • 3.5 mm and 4 mm crochet hooks

Stitch Patterns and Charts

“Arch” Stitch

(Work with the 4 mm hook)

The number of stitches in the starting chain should be a multiple of 15 + 12.

Work from Chart 1. Begin each row with 3 or 1 turning chain(s) in place of the first dc or the first sc, respectively, and with the stitches before the repeat; repeat the pattern repeat continuously, ending with the stitches after the repeat.

Work rows 1–3 once, then repeat rows 2 and 3 continuously.

Always work the sc into the chain arch of the previous row.

Important: a pair of two groups of 3 dc worked together is referred to in the text as a “bobble.”

Striped Pattern With “Fan” Motifs

(Work with the 3.5 mm hook)

The number of stitches cast on at the start should be a multiple of 4.

Work from Chart 2 in rounds directly onto the starting row of the “arch” pattern. Begin each round with the number of chains indicated on the chart, repeat the pattern repeat continuously, and work the transition from one round to the next as shown on the chart.

Repeat rows 1–8 continuously, working the 2nd and 6th rows of the pattern in blue yarn and all other rows in heathered blue-violet yarn. In the 3rd and 7th rounds, work the sc into the 3rd chain of the previous round, respectively.

Important: work the last slip stitch of row 1 of the pattern in blue yarn, then turn the work using the indicated number of chains and work round 2 of the pattern as a wrong-side row (see arrow), finishing with 1 slip stitch into the starting chain. For round 3 of the pattern, and later for round 7, attach the heathered blue-violet yarn on the right side to the 3rd chain of the last “fan.”

Gauge

20.5 sts of the starting row x 9.5 rows = 10 x 10 cm, worked in the “arch” pattern;

20 sts of the starting row x 11 rounds = 10 x 10 cm, worked in the striped pattern with “fan” motifs.

Instructions

Back

With the blue-violet heathered yarn, make a starting chain of 87 ch + 3 turning ch, then work in the “arch” pattern = 4 repeats + starting and ending stitches.

After 23 cm = 22 rows from the starting row, stop working the outer arches on both sides for the armholes: at the beginning of the row, skip the first 7 sts with slip stitches, and at the end of the row leave the last 7 sts unworked. Then decrease 2 more times on both sides in the same way by half an arch (= 1 x 4 sts and 1 x 3 sts); the decreases correspond to 10 stitches of the starting row.

Begin even rows with 1 sc and 1 “bobble” and finish symmetrically; in odd rows, work arches of 12 ch + 1 sc + half an arch of chains on each side.

After 42 cm = 40 rows from the starting row, leave the center 2 repeats minus 1 stitch (for symmetry) unworked for the neckline, and finish both sides separately.

To shape the inner edge, decrease half an arch of chains in the following row; the remaining shoulder width = 2 chain arches + half an arch on each side, corresponding to 16 stitches of the starting row.

At the same time as the first neckline decrease, decrease half a chain arch on the outer edge for the shoulder slope, then decrease 1 full arch in the following row. After 44 cm = 42 rows from the starting row, finish the piece on the last 1.5 chain arches.

Left Front

With the heathered yarn, make a starting chain of 42 ch + 3 turning ch, then work in the “arch” pattern = 1 repeat + starting and ending stitches. Work the armhole on the right edge as for the back.

For the neckline, at the same time as the first armhole decrease, decrease half an arch of chains on the left edge, then decrease half an arch of chains every 3rd row until the shoulder width equals 2 chain arches + half an arch on each side.

Shape the shoulder slope as for the back.

Right Front

Work as for the left front, but reversed (mirror image).

Sleeves

For each sleeve, with the blue-violet heathered yarn, make a starting chain of 45 ch + 3 turning ch, then work in the “arch” pattern, starting with the stitches from arrow A, repeating the pattern repeat 2 times, and ending with the stitches up to arrow B.

To shape the sleeve, increase on both sides by half an arch of chains 1x in row 8 and 1x in row 17 from the starting row, thereby increasing the number of starting and ending stitches = 2 repeats + starting and ending stitches.

After 25.5 cm = 24 rows from the starting row, decrease for the sleeve cap on both sides by half an arch of chains, then 3x in every row by half an arch, then work 2 rows without decreases, then decrease 6 more times in every row by half an arch of chains.

After 38 cm = 36 rows from the starting row, finish the piece, working the remaining 2 half chain arches.

Finishing

Sew the shoulder and side seams.

Work 1 round of sc around the front bands and back neckline with the blue-violet heathered yarn, joining the left and right fronts at the bottom edge with 1 chain stitch to connect them.

Work the striped pattern trim around the bottom edges of the back and front, starting the stitch count at the left side seam with the heathered yarn, working 84 sc along each edge in round 1 = 168 sc total = 42 repeats. Finish after 12.5 cm = 14 rounds.

Sew the sleeve seams.

Attach the blue-violet heathered yarn at the start of each sleeve seam, work the striped pattern trim around the sleeve edge, working 44 sc around each sleeve edge in round 1 = 11 repeats. Finish after 12.5 cm = 14 rounds.

For the tie, with the blue yarn make a chain about 140 cm long and work 1 row of sc around it. Thread the tie crosswise along the front bands between the bottom edge of the opening and the neckline slope.
