Long Sweater with Nordic Pattern

Long Sweater with Nordic Pattern - long sweater on a woman

Sizes: 36/38 (40/42) 44/46

You will need:

  • 450 (500) 550 g of white and 250 (300) 300 g of black Merino 105 yarn (100% merino wool, 105 m/50 g);
  • straight knitting needles size 4 mm and 4.5 mm;
  • 4 mm circular needles.

1×1 Rib, 4 mm needles: number of stitches divisible by 4 + 2 selvage sts.

Right side row: selvage st, * k1, p2, k1, repeat from *, selvage st.

Wrong side row: work sts as they appear. Work the following patterns on 4.5 mm needles. Stockinette stitch: RS rows – knit, WS rows – purl.

Jacquard pattern: repeat = 24 sts. Work from the chart using separate balls of yarn in stockinette stitch, using the Fair Isle (stranded) technique, carrying the unused yarn loosely across the wrong side of the work. The chart shows both RS and WS rows. Distribute stitches according to the instructions. Repeat rows 1 to 52. Special decreases: at the beginning of the row, after the selvage st, knit 2 sts together; at the end of the row, before the selvage st, work 1 slip-stitch decrease (= slip 1 st as if to knit, k1, and pass the slipped st over).

Gauge, jacquard pattern: 22 sts and 28 rows = 10 x 10 cm.

Knitting the Sweater

Back: using white yarn, cast on 90 (98) 106 sts and work 11 cm of ribbing for the waistband, increasing evenly on the last WS row by 19 (21) 23 sts = 109 (119) 129 sts. Then work in jacquard pattern as follows: begin with 1 selvage st and the last 5 (10) 15 sts of the repeat, work 4 repeats, end with the first 6 (11) 16 sts of the repeat and 1 selvage st. After 8 cm = 22 rows from the waistband, decrease 1 st on both sides for shaping: 4 times every 6th row and 3 times every 4th row = 93 (103) 113 sts. After 23.5 cm = 66 rows from the waistband, increase 1 st on both sides for the side shaping and 4 times every 6th row 1 st = 103 (113) 123 sts, working the increased sts into the pattern. After 36.5 cm = 102 rows from the waistband, bind off 5 sts on both sides for the raglan shaping and decrease using the special decreases every 4th row 3 times and every 2nd row 27 (30) 33 times, 1 st each time. After 60 cm = 168 rows (62 cm = 174 rows) 64 cm = 180 rows from the waistband (= at the same time as the last raglan decrease), bind off the remaining 33 (37) 41 sts for the neckline. Pocket lining (make 2): using white yarn, cast on 24 sts, work 9 cm in stockinette stitch, then place sts on hold.

Front: work the same way, but with pockets, shorter raglan shaping, and a neckline. In row 25 from the waistband – with 107 (117) 127 sts on the needle – work the pockets as follows: work 15 (18) 21 sts, place the next 24 sts on hold for the front pocket opening, work 29 (33) 37 sts, place the next 24 sts on hold, and work 15 (18) 21 sts. On the WS row, work the pocket lining sts in place of the held sts and continue in pattern. For the shorter raglan shaping, bind off 5 sts on both sides at the same height as on the back, and decrease using the special decreases every 4th row 3 times and every 2nd row 24 (27) 30 times, 1 st each time. At the same time, after 56 cm = 156 rows (58 cm = 162 rows) 60 cm = 168 rows from the waistband, bind off the center 27 (31) 35 sts for the neckline and finish both sides separately. For the neckline curve, bind off at the inner edge every 2nd row 1 time 2 sts and 1 time 1 st. After 58 cm = 162 rows (60 cm = 168 rows) 62 cm = 174 rows from the waistband (= at the same time as the last raglan decrease), knit the remaining 3 sts together on each side and pull the working yarn through the last stitch.

Left Sleeve: using white yarn, cast on 42 (50) 58 sts and work 11 cm of ribbing for the cuff, increasing evenly on the last WS row by 7 sts = 49 (57) 65 sts. Then work in jacquard pattern starting from row 9 of the chart as follows: begin with 1 selvage st and the last 11 (15) 19 sts of the repeat, work 1 repeat, end with the first 12 (16) 20 sts of the repeat and 1 selvage st. For the sleeve shaping, increase from the cuff on both sides every 8th row 7 times and every 6th row 6 times, 1 st each time = 75 (83) 91 sts, working the increased sts into the pattern. After 33.5 cm = 94 rows from the cuff, bind off 5 sts on both sides for the raglan shaping, then decrease using the special decreases on the right side as on the back, and on the left side as on the front, and continuing the front raglan shaping, bind off for the neckline curve on the left side every 2nd row 2 times 4 (5) 6 sts. Finish the work after 57 cm = 160 rows (59 cm = 166 rows) 61 cm = 172 rows from the cuff.

Right Sleeve: work to match, reversing shaping.

Finishing: sew the raglan seams, side seams, and sleeve seams. Along the neckline, pick up 80 (92) 104 sts with white yarn on circular needles, work 22 cm of ribbing in the round for the collar, and bind off all stitches in pattern. Transfer the 24 held sts of the pocket fronts to the needles and work 2.5 cm of ribbing with white yarn for the pocket bands, beginning and ending with 2 knit sts between selvage sts. Then bind off all stitches in pattern. Sew the short sides of the pocket bands, and sew the pocket linings to the wrong side.
