Stitch Patterns and Charts

Crochet Squares

Work with a 4 mm hook following Chart 1 in continuous rounds.

For the 1st square, make a chain of 8 sts and join with 1 sl st to form a ring. Work 2 rounds following the chart, starting each round with the number of turning chains shown instead of the 1st stitch, and ending with 1 sl st.

Work all following squares the same as the 1st square, but in the 2nd round join them to the previous square. To do this, instead of the center chain of a corner arch or a middle arch, work 1 sc around the corresponding arch of the previous square.

The arrows on the right side edge of the chart mark the joining points. If the corners of 4 squares meet, work the 2nd and 3rd joining sc into the sc of the 1st joint.

Join the 2nd round of a square within the pattern sequence to the main pattern as follows: instead of the center chain of the 1st corner arch, work 1 sc between 2 groups of dc of Pattern 1; instead of the center chain of the middle arch, work 1 sc into the middle of the 2nd following dc group; instead of the center chain of the 2nd corner arch, work 1 sc between both following dc groups.

Continue in the same manner, joining corner arches as described above whenever 2 squares meet.

Main Pattern

Stitch count is a multiple of 3.

Work with a 4.5 mm hook following Chart 2 directly onto the squares, working 1 group of dc = 3 dc into 1 base stitch into each chain-arch of the squares, giving 3 dc groups per square. Begin each round with 3 chains instead of the 1st dc and end with 1 sl st into the 3rd chain of the turning chain.

Repeat the pattern repeat continuously. Work the round transition following the chart. Work rounds 1–3 once, then repeat rounds 2 and 3 continuously.

Pattern Sequence

* 1 round of squares, 15 rounds of main pattern, repeat from * once more.

Picot Edging

Work with a 4.5 mm hook. Begin each round with 1 chain instead of the 1st sc and end with 1 sl st into the starting chain.

Round 1: sc.

Round 2: * 1 sc, work 1 picot (= 3 chains, 1 sc into the 1st chain), skip 1 sc of the previous round, 1 sc; repeat from * continuously.

Gauge

1 square = 7.5 x 7.5 cm, worked with a 4 mm hook,

12 dc x 8 rounds = 10 x 10 cm, worked in the main pattern with a 4.5 mm hook.

Note! Work the back and front as a single piece in continuous rounds up to the armholes. Then finish both pieces separately.

Instructions

Back and Front

Work following the pattern sequence, starting with 1 round of squares. To do this, make 12 squares and first join them in a row, then also join the 12th square to the 1st, closing the row into a ring.

For the main pattern this gives 36 dc groups = 108 stitches.

Once the pattern sequence is complete, divide the work.

For the upper back, work 2 more rounds of squares of 6 squares each over dc groups 1–18.

Finish the upper front over dc groups 19–36 in the same way; in the last round of squares, join the outer 1 1/2 squares on both sides to the corresponding squares of the back to form the shoulder seams = total height 67 cm.

Sleeves

For each sleeve, work 4 squares and join them in a row, then also join the 4th square to the 1st, closing the row into a ring. Then work 5 more rounds of squares of 4 squares each and join them to the previous round of squares. To set in the sleeves, join the top edge of the 4 sleeve squares from the shoulder line to the outer 2 squares of the back and front.

Finishing

Edge the neckline, the lower edges of the sleeves, and the lower edge of the pullover with picot edging.
