In this video lesson, we will learn how to create a beautiful padded satin stitch embroidery using a simple leaf motif. To begin, draw the outline of the leaf on your fabric using a regular pencil.
The padding (understitching) provides a raised, 3D effect. It should be substantial and can be stitched using a thread folded in two or more strands. However, note that the foundational padding stitches themselves do not need to be placed too tightly together.
When applying the final top satin stitch, the thread should be thinner than the padding thread and preferably contrasting. Start embroidering from the center of the left half of the leaf towards the outer edge, and then proceed to complete the right half. It is crucial to lay your top stitches very closely together, working from the center outward, so the padding underneath is completely hidden.
Finally, to give the embroidered leaf a polished and elegant look, we outline the contour with a decorative gold cord.
