In today’s tutorial, I will show you how to create beautiful 3D embroidery (also known as stumpwork) using a “viola” flower pattern as our example. This technique allows you to make realistic, raised floral elements that truly stand out.
For this project, we will need DMC embroidery threads and thin craft wire (approximately 0.4 mm thick).
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Prepare the wire: Cut the wire to the required length and stitch it down onto the fabric, following the outline of your design.
- Plan the stitches: Lightly mark the direction of your stitches with a pencil.
- Stitch the outline: Secure your thread and begin covering the wire using a buttonhole stitch, catching both the wire and the underlying fabric. Your stitches must be even, dense, and placed very closely together so that the wire is completely hidden. All the remaining parts of the flower are embroidered in this exact same way.
- Cut out the pieces: Once you have embroidered all the flower parts, carefully cut them out along the contour with sharp scissors, trimming away any excess fabric. Tip: If you accidentally cut too close to the thread, treat those spots with a little clear fabric glue to prevent fraying.
- Assembly: In the final stage, gently bend the petals and leaves to give them a natural 3D shape, and assemble them all together to form a flower.
