VIDEO: DIY Glass Painting with Glass Outliners – Beer Mug Decorating Masterclass

In this step-by-step video tutorial, “DIY Glass Painting with Outliners,” you will learn how to easily transform an ordinary beer mug (or wine glass, tumbler, or vase) into a personalized piece of hand-painted glassware using 3D glass relief outliners.

Supplies you will need:

  • Clear glassware: A beer mug, wine glass, pint glass, or glass vase.
  • Glass outliners (relief/contour paint): Pick colors according to your chosen pattern (metallic, black, or vibrant shades).
  • Printed design template: A stencil or line-art pattern sized to fit inside your glass.
  • Rubbing alcohol (or acetone) & cotton pads: To thoroughly degrease the glass surface.
  • Adhesive tape: To secure the template inside the mug.
  • Paper towels or wet wipes: To keep the outliner nozzle clean during application.

Step-by-step painting and curing process:

  1. Choose and prepare your pattern: Search for line-art patterns or glass painting stencils online. Print your favorite design and trim it to fit snugly against the inner wall of the glass.
  2. Degrease the glass: Clean the outside surface thoroughly using rubbing alcohol, vodka, or acetone. Make sure not to touch the working surface with bare fingers afterward, as natural skin oils can prevent the paint from adhering properly.
  3. Position the template: Place the cut-out design inside the mug and secure it firmly against the glass using small strips of clear adhesive tape.
  4. Trace with glass outliners: Trace the lines from the outside using your glass contour paints. Apply steady, even pressure to create smooth, unbroken lines. Periodically wipe the nozzle tip with a paper towel to avoid paint buildup and smudges. The entire drawing takes about 10–15 minutes.
  5. Let the paint dry: Carefully remove the paper template from inside the mug and allow the paint to air-dry for at least 6 hours.
  6. Oven-bake for durability: Place the dry glassware into a cold oven and set the temperature to 170°C (340°F). Once it reaches temperature, bake for 30 minutes, then turn off the oven and let the glass cool down completely inside. This baking process cures the paint, making the design durable, water-resistant, and long-lasting.
