If you have plain or unused glassware around your home, don’t let it sit forgotten in the cupboard—give it a second life with stunning handmade artwork! Using specialized glass and ceramic relief paints, you can turn ordinary cups, wine glasses, or vases into captivating pieces of home decor using the Point-to-Point (Dot Art) technique.
Supplies you will need:
- Clear glassware: A wine glass, goblet, tumbler, or vase.
- 3D glass outliners (relief/contour paints): Choose several contrasting or complementary colors from your local craft or stationery store.
- Rubbing alcohol (or vodka/acetone) & cotton pads: To thoroughly degrease the glass.
- Printed pattern/stencil: A dot-art or mandala line drawing sized to fit inside your glass.
- Adhesive tape: To secure the template inside the glass.
- Paper towels or cotton swabs: To clean the outliner nozzle and quickly correct minor mistakes.
Step-by-step instructions:
- Prepare and degrease the glass: Wash the glass thoroughly with soap and water, let it dry, and wipe the entire outside surface with rubbing alcohol. This removes all oils and ensures the paint bonds securely to the surface. Avoid touching the clean glass with bare hands.
- Position the design template: Select a pattern online (such as dot mandalas or floral ornaments) that matches your skill level. Print and trim the design, place it on the inside of the glass, and tape it flat against the inner surface.
- Apply the dot pattern: Hold the 3D glass outliner at a slight angle and apply gentle, uniform pressure to form neat dots of varying sizes directly over the guide lines on the glass. Alternate colors to add depth and rhythm to your design.
- Allow to dry completely: Carefully remove the paper template from inside the glass. Place the painted glassware in a dust-free area and let the paint air-dry thoroughly for at least 12 hours.
- Bake to heat-cure: Place the fully dried glass into a cold oven and set the temperature to 160°C (320°F). Bake for 20 minutes once the temperature is reached, then turn off the oven and allow the glass to cool down completely inside before handling. This heat-setting process hardens the acrylic relief paint, making the finished artwork durable and water-resistant.
