This free video tutorial, “Cross Stitch for Beginners: Securing Thread with the Loop Method,” will guide you through one of the cleanest and most popular techniques for starting your embroidery.
The loop start method is ideal when working with an even number of strands (such as folding one long strand of floss in half to create two threads).
How to do it:
- Thread your needle with the two cut ends together, leaving a folded loop at the opposite end.
- Insert your needle into the fabric from the back to the front, leaving the small loop on the back (wrong side) of your canvas.
- Make your first half-cross stitch on the front (right side) and bring the needle back to the wrong side.
- Pass the needle directly through the remaining loop on the back.
- Gently pull the thread snug to lock it into place, and continue stitching as usual.
As you can see, starting your cross stitch project with the loop method is remarkably fast, simple, and keeps the back of your fabric completely flat and knot-free.
