VIDEO: Cross Stitch Tutorial – How to Do Fringe Stitch (Looped Stitch)

The Fringe Stitch (also known as the Looped Cross Stitch or Tufted Stitch) is an eye-catching decorative technique used to add 3D volume, raised loops, fluffy texture, and fringe effects to your embroidery projects.

Materials & Tools Needed:

  • Embroidery fabric (Aida or evenweave linen)
  • Stranded embroidery floss
  • Standard tapestry needle
  • Large darning needle, knitting needle, or spacer stick (to hold and gauge the loops evenly)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Forming the Loop:

  • Bring your needle and working thread up to the front (right side) of the fabric through the bottom-left corner of the grid square.
  • Using a large darning needle, knitting needle, or your finger as a spacer, pull the thread to create a loop of your desired height.

2. The First Diagonal Stitch:

  • While holding the loop securely in place, insert the needle into the fabric at the top-right corner of the square to make your first diagonal stitch.

3. Locking the Cross & Loop:

  • Bring the needle up at the top-left corner.
  • Make the crossing diagonal stitch downward, inserting the needle directly into the fabric through the center of the loop at the bottom-right corner. This anchors the loop firmly to the canvas.

Repeating the Technique:

  • Continue working the sequence along your row to form a dense, textured row of loops. You can leave the loops intact or snip and brush them out for a fluffy tufted effect.

💡 Craft Tip: Keep consistent tension on your spacer needle so that every loop in the row has identical height and volume.
