Pattern Instructions for “Crochet Espadrilles with Rings”

You Will Need
- yarn (60% polyester, 25% linen, 15% viscose, 35 m/50 g) – 200 g red and 50 g pink
- size 5 mm and 5.5 mm crochet hooks
- 1 pair of rope soles, size 38
- 1 spool of beige thread
- 2 large flat rings, 36 mm diameter
- 4 medium flat rings, 26 mm diameter
- 4 small rings, 11/16 mm diameter
Instructions
Toe
With a 5.5 mm hook and red yarn, ch 3.
Row 1: ch 1, 3 sc.
Row 2: ch 1, 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc, 2 sc in 1 st = 5 sc.
Row 3: ch 1, 1 sc, 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc, 2 sc in 1 st, 1 sc = 7 sc.
Row 4: ch 1, 1 sc, 2 sc in 1st st, 3 sc, 2 sc in 1st st, 1 sc = 9 sts.
Row 5: ch 1, 9 sc.
Rows 6 + 7: ch 2, 1 hdc, 7 sc, 1 hdc = 9 sts.
Row 8: ch 2, 1 hdc, 2 sc in 1st st, 5 sc, 2 sc in 1 st, 1 hdc = 11 sts.
Rows 9 + 10: ch 2, 1 hdc, 9 sc, 1 hdc = 11 sts.
Row 11: ch 2, 1 hdc, 2 sc in 1 st, 7 sc, 2 sc in 1st st, 1 hdc = 13 sts.
Rounds 12 + 13: 13 sl st along the top edge and 25 sl st along the sides of the toe, join the round with 1 sl st into the 1st sl st.
Make the second toe piece the same way.
Heel Half
(Make 2 pieces for each espadrille)
With a 5.5 mm hook and red yarn, ch 4.
Row 1: ch 1, 4 sc.
Row 2: ch 1, 1 sc, 2 sc in 1st st, 2 sc = 5 sc.
Row 3: ch 1, 1 sc, 2 sc in 1st st, 3 sc = 6 sc.
Row 4: ch 1, 6 sc = 6 sc.
Row 5: ch 1, 1 sc, 2 sc in 1st st, 4 sc = 7 sc.
Row 6: ch 1, 7 sc = 7 sts.
Row 7: ch 1, 1 sc, 2 sc in 1st st, 5 sc = 8 sc.
Rows 8 + 9: ch 1, 8 sc = 8 sts.
Finishing
Join both heel halves along the last row with red thread using mattress stitch, shaping the heel. Work around the lower edge of the heel with a 5.5 mm hook and red thread for 2 rounds of 21 sl st, and around the top edge with 1 round of 23 sc and 1 round of sl st.
With a 5.5 mm hook and pink thread, work around 4 medium flat rings:
Round 1: 13 sc, join the round with a sl st into the 1st sc;
Round 2: *3 sl st, 1 ch, repeat from * 4 times, 1 sl st, join the round with 1 sl st into the 1st sl st = 17 sl st.
Sew these rings to both sides of the starting row of the heel half.
Work around 2 large rings with a 5.5 mm hook:
Round 1 (red thread): 18 sc, join the round with a sl st into the 1st sc;
Round 2 (pink thread): *2 sc, 2 sc in 1st st, repeat from * 6 times, join the round with 1 sl st into the 1st sl st = 24 sl st.
Working around 4 small plastic rings with a 5.5 mm hook:
Round 1 (red thread): 9 sc, join the round with a sl st into the 1st sc;
Round 2 (pink thread): *3 sl st, 1 ch, repeat from * 3 times, 1 sl st, join the round with 1 sl st into the 1st sl st = 9 sl st.
Join 2 small plastic rings and 1 large ring (the large ring sits between the small ones). Then sew the large ring to the middle of the last row of the toe piece. Do not sew on the small rings!
For the back loop, work with a 5 mm hook and pink thread from the middle of the top edge of each heel: work 3 sc and continue for 10 rows of 3 sc, starting each row with 1 turning chain.
Fold the loop in half inward and sew in place.
Make laces for each espadrille. To do this, crochet 2 red chains of 150 ch with a 5 mm hook, starting each chain from the middle edge of the large ring. Wrap the starting end of each chain with red thread.
Sew the toe and heel pieces to the sole with beige thread using an overcast stitch.
Tie the red laces in a knot at the heel’s medium rings, then thread them through the back loop.
