Size: about 25 cm x 165 cm (excluding fringe).
You will need:
- 3 balls of 100 g earthy brown color;
- 1 ball each of dark brown, unbleached (natural) color, black, medium brown, and reddish-brown;
- A pair each of 4 mm and 5 mm knitting needles.
Gauge:
- 20 sts and 22 rows to 10 cm in stockinette stitch worked in pattern on the larger needles;
- 24 sts and 28 rows to 10 cm in 1×1 rib on the larger needles.
Adjust needle size as needed to match the gauge given.
Scarf Knitting Chart
With the larger needles and color A, cast on 50 sts.
Row 1 (right side): *P2 in color A, k1 in main color; repeat from *, end with p2 in color A.
Row 2: *K2 in color A, p1 in main color; repeat from *, end with k2 in color A.
Beginning of Pattern
Row 1 (right side): p1 (selvage st), starting with st 2, work row 1 of the chart in stockinette stitch to the last st, p1 (selvage st). Working the selvage sts in the color shown on the chart, work 38 rows of the pattern.
+Next row (right side): *K2 in color A, p1 in main color; repeat from *, end with k2 in color A.
Next row (wrong side): *K2 in color A, p1 in main color; repeat from *, end with k2 in color A.
Next row (right side): *P2 in color A, k1 in main color; repeat from *, end with p2 in color A+.
Next row (wrong side): purl in color A.
Next row (right side): in main color, cast on 2 sts at the beginning of the row, knit to the end, increasing 7 sts evenly, and work 2 sts from the last st — 61 sts total.
Next row (wrong side): k1, p1; repeat from *, end with k1.
Next row: k1, *p1, k1; repeat from * to end.
Repeat these 2 rows of 1×1 rib until the scarf measures 144.5 cm.
Next row (right side): in main color, bind off 2 sts at the beginning of the row, knit, decreasing 7 sts evenly, work the last 3 sts together as k3tog — 50 sts total. Row 1 in color A, purl. Repeat once between +.
Then work the chart in reverse order (from row 38 back to row 1). Repeat once between +. Bind off in color A.
Scarf Color Chart
Finishing
Steam block the scarf to the desired dimensions. With the smaller needles and main color, pick up 36 sts evenly along the edge of the patterned section (through the selvage sts) and knit them. Bind off knitwise from the wrong side. Work the other side of the colored band in the same way. Carefully sew the edges of the resulting border to the start of the ribbing.
Fringe
Cut 12 strands of the main color, 38 cm long, for each tassel, and attach 9 tassels along each end, alternating with color A “points” (tie knots on the wrong side).
