Ski Hat with Tassels

You’ll look très cool in this warm hat. Although it looks like the dream of a flirty beginner skier, it was actually inspired by Zen culture. This piece is worked in stockinette stitch. Although this stitch is simple to work, it takes some time to get a smooth, even fabric. Afterward, the hat is folded at the back like origami, and tassels are attached. The result is a fun mix of East and West styles.

HAT

Brim

Cast on 78(88) sts onto circular needles. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist, and place a marker at the beginning of the round. Work in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 10 cm. Turn the work to the right side.

Crown

Continue working in stockinette stitch until the piece measures 43 cm from the beginning. Transfer the first 39(44) sts onto one double-pointed needle, and the remaining 39(44) sts onto a second double-pointed needle. Bind off using the 3-needle bind-off method.

Finishing

Fold the brim up 10 cm to the right side. Fold the right and left top corners of the hat so they meet. Sew the corners together. Fold the top of the hat in the opposite direction so that its edge sits 2.5 cm from the brim’s edge, with the wrong side facing out. Secure the center of the top edge.

Tassels (2 pieces)

Wrap yarn 28 times around a strip of cardboard 9 cm wide. Cut 2 strands of yarn, each 30.5 cm long. Thread 1 strand under the wound loops. Bring the yarn end over the top of the cardboard strip. Pull up the ends and tie a double knot. On the opposite side of the cardboard strip, cut the loops and slide the tassel off. About 2 cm from the top of the tassel, wrap it 6 times with the second strand of yarn, then tie the ends with a double knot. Thread both yarn ends onto a tapestry needle and run the yarn through the center of the tassel from bottom to top.

Trim the tassel ends with scissors. Using the yarn ends coming out of the top of the tassel, sew it to the right corner of the hat where the corners are joined together. Make a second tassel and sew it to the left corner of the hat where the corners are joined together (see photo).
