Gauge

16 sc x 18 rows = 10 x 10 cm, worked in the main pattern with the yarn held double.

Important: always work with the yarn held double!

Instructions

With the yarn held double, chain 43 + 1 ch and work in the main pattern in rounds as follows:

Round 1: starting in the 3rd chain from the hook, work 1 sc into each of the next 41 chains, work 5 sc into the last chain to round the corner, then work along the other side of the starting chain, work 41 sc, and work 4 more sc into the last chain; end the round with 1 slip stitch into the turning chain = 92 sc.

Round 2: work 1 sc into each stitch, doubling the first and last stitch on both curves = 96 sc.

Rounds 3-10: repeat round 2 continuously, working 4 increases in each round = 128 sc.

Round 11: 128 sc, working this round through the back loop only along the edge of the base.

Rounds 12-20: 128 sc each.

Rounds 21-31: work in the fancy stitch pattern = 32 repeats.

Round 32: continue in the main pattern, working 4 sc in each repeat = 128 sc. Rounds 33-41: 128 sc each.

For the strap, with the yarn held double, chain 13 + 1 ch (= 1st sc) and work in the main pattern in rows back and forth, decreasing 3 x 1 st on both sides every 10th row = 7 sc. After 40 rows from the starting row, increase again by 1 st on both sides, then 2 x 1 st every 10th row = 13 sc. After 40 cm = 70 rows from the starting row, fasten off.

Finishing

Sew the strap to both sides of the top edge on the short sides of the bag. Work 1 round of crab stitch (= sc worked from left to right) around the edges of the strap and the top edges of the bag.
