Sweater sizes: 38/40 (42/44) 46/48
You will need:
- 550 (600) 650 g of lilac Amalfi yarn (70% cotton, 15% viscose, 10% linen, 5% silk, 100 m/50 g);
- straight knitting needles size 3.5 mm and 4 mm;
- 3.5 mm circular needles.
1×1 Rib, 3.5 mm needles: alternate 1 knit, 1 purl.
For the increases and decreases in both of the following patterns, make sure the number of yarn overs matches the number of stitches worked together.
Diamond Pattern, 3.5 mm needles: multiple of 10 sts + 1 + 2 selvage sts. Work from Chart 1, which shows only right-side (RS) rows; on wrong-side (WS) rows, purl all sts and yarn overs. Begin with 1 selvage st and the sts before the repeat, repeat the pattern repeat, end with the sts after the repeat and 1 selvage st. Work rows 1-30 once.
Zigzag Pattern, 4 mm needles: multiple of 20 sts + 11 + 2 selvage sts. Work from Chart 2, which shows RS rows and some WS rows; on unmarked WS rows, work sts as they appear and purl the yarn overs. Begin with 1 selvage st and the sts before the repeat, repeat the pattern repeat, end with the sts after the repeat and 1 selvage st. Work rows 1-34 once.
Pattern Sequence: alternate 30 rows of Diamond Pattern on 3.5 mm needles and 34 rows of Zigzag Pattern on 4 mm needles.
Gauge: 20 sts and 28 rows = 10 x 10 cm.
Knitting and Finishing the Sweater

Back: Cast on 93 (103) 113 sts and work 4 cm in rib between selvage sts, working all sts as purl in the last WS row. Then work in the pattern sequence given; for size 42/44, begin the zigzag pattern with 1 selvage st and the sts from arrow A, work 5 pattern repeats, end with 1 selvage st. After 43 cm = 120 rows from the rib, bind off 3 sts on both sides for the armholes, then in every 2nd row bind off 2 sts twice and 1 st three times = 73 (83) 93 sts. After 60 cm = 168 rows (62 cm = 174 rows) 64 cm = 180 rows from the rib, bind off the center 23 (25) 27 sts for the neckline and finish both sides separately. For shaping, bind off at the inner edge in every 2nd row 3 sts once and 2 sts twice. After 63 cm = 176 rows (65 cm = 182 rows) 67 cm = 188 rows from the rib, bind off the remaining 18 (22) 26 shoulder sts on each side.
Front: Work the same way, but for a deeper neckline, bind off the center 15 (17) 19 sts after 51 cm = 142 rows (53 cm = 148 rows) 55 cm = 154 rows from the rib, and at the inner edge in every 2nd row bind off 3 sts once, 2 sts three times, and 1 st twice.
Sleeves: Cast on 45 (49) 53 sts and work 4 cm in rib between selvage sts, working all sts as purl in the last WS row while evenly increasing 12 sts = 57 (61) 65 sts. Then work in the pattern sequence given, arranging the patterns from the center. At the same time, from the rib increase 1 st on both sides for the sleeve shaping: 8 times every 12th row (10 times every 10th row) 12 times every 8th row = 73 (81) 89 sts, working the increased sts into the pattern. After 43 cm = 120 rows from the rib, bind off 3 sts on both sides for the sleeve cap, then in every 2nd row bind off 2 sts 2 (6) 10 times and 1 st 22 (18) 14 times. After 60.5 cm = 170 rows from the rib, bind off the remaining 15 sts.
Finishing: Sew the shoulder seams. Pick up 96 (100) 104 sts around the neckline on circular needles and work the rib for the button band. At a band height of 3 cm, bind off all sts in pattern. Set in the sleeves, sew the side and sleeve seams.
