This online tutorial explains how to cast on stitches and make a starting chain in crochet. To begin, drape the end of the working yarn over the index finger of your left hand and lay it across your palm. Hold the yarn in place with your left thumb.
Next, insert the crochet hook under the working yarn and twist it once counterclockwise. Then, drop the yarn from your index finger. Now, wrap the yarn coming from the ball over your left index finger again. Insert the hook under the yarn (yarn over) and pull it through the loop that has formed on your hook. After that, tighten the knot. This creates a secure slip knot, and you now have one loop on your hook.
To continue building your chain, insert the hook under the yarn, grab it, and pull it through the loop on the hook. Repeat this process to make your next chain stitches. Yarn over once more and pull it through the loop that is currently on the hook.
To ensure your stitches are even and consistent, always hold the last completed stitch with your left thumb and middle finger. If done correctly, you should get a neat, even braid, known as a foundation chain.
