Cable Knit Cardigan with Pockets

Cable Knit Cardigan with Pockets - man wearing cable cardigan

Cardigan Sizes: 48/50 (52/54)

The figures in parentheses refer to size 52/54. If only one figure is given, it applies to both sizes.

You will need

  • Yarn (60% sheep’s wool, 40% polyacrylic; approx. 85 m/50 g), 700 (750) g melange blue;
  • 4.5 mm knitting needles;
  • 4 dark blue buttons, 23 mm diameter.

Rib pattern: alternating 1 knit, 1 purl.

Cable fancy pattern: work according to the chart. The numbers on the right outside indicate knit rows. On purl rows, work the stitches as they appear; repeat rows 1-10 throughout. For the exact stitch distribution across the width, see the instructions.

Gauge: cable fancy pattern – 20 sts x 24 rows = 10 x 10 cm.

Knitting the Cardigan

Back: Cast on 114 (120) sts and work in rib for 3 cm = 7 rows, starting with 1 purl row, and after the selvage st work 1 knit st. Then work in the cable fancy pattern, distributing the stitches as follows: selvage st, 0 (3) sts between arrows c-a, repeat the pattern between arrows a-b 8 times = 112 sts, 0 (3) sts between arrows b-d, selvage st.

After 41 cm = 98 rows of the fancy pattern, bind off on both sides every 2nd row for the armholes: 2 x 3 sts, 2 x 2 sts, 1 (2) x 1 st, and every 4th row 2 x 1 st = 88 (92) sts. At an armhole height of 24 (25) cm = 58 (60) rows, bind off for the shoulder slopes on both sides every 2nd row: 4 (2) x 7 sts and 0 (2) x 8 sts. At the same time, with the 1st shoulder decrease, bind off the center 22 sts for the neckline and work both sides separately. For further shaping of the inner edge, bind off every 2nd row 1 x 3 sts and 1 x 2 sts. Finish the other side to mirror.

Pocket: Cast on 26 sts and work 17 rows in stockinette stitch. Then, increasing evenly, add 4 sts, distributing the stitches as follows: selvage st, work the repeat between arrows a-b 2 times = 28 sts, selvage st. Work 11 rows in the cable fancy pattern; in the last row, bind off both selvage sts, leave all other stitches on hold. Knit the second pocket the same way.

Left Front: Cast on 62 (65) sts and work in rib for 3 cm = 7 rows, starting with 1 purl row, and after the selvage st work 1 purl st. Then work in the cable fancy pattern, distributing the stitches as follows: selvage st, 0 (3) sts between arrows c-a, repeat the pattern between arrows a-b 3 times = 42 sts, 10 sts between arrows a-e, 8 sts in rib for the button band, selvage st.

At the same time, work 4 buttonholes along the left edge: the first buttonhole at a distance of 3.5 cm from the starting row, correspondingly in the 3rd row of the cable fancy pattern, as follows: 3 sts in rib, k2tog with left-leaning slant (slip 1 knit st, the 2nd is a purl st, pull the slipped stitch through it), 1 yarn over; work the remaining stitches as set. On the following purl row, work the yarn over as a knit stitch. Work 3 more buttonholes at intervals of 12.5 cm = 30 rows of the cable fancy pattern.

For the pocket band, after 17.5 cm = 42 rows from the ribbing, work as follows for 4 rows: selvage st, 0 (3) sts between arrows c-a, 1 repeat between arrows a-b = 14 sts, 28 sts in rib, starting with 1 knit st, 10 sts between arrows a-e, 8 sts in rib for the button band, selvage st. In row 5, bind off the 28 sts of the pocket band; in the following purl row, insert the separate pocket lining piece. To do this, work the held pocket lining stitches instead of the bound-off pocket band stitches.

After 42 cm = 101 rows from the starting row, decrease for the V-neckline along the left edge every 6th row 12 x 1 st as follows: on a knit row, work to the last 10 sts, then work 2 sts together purlwise, work the remaining stitches in rib. Work the shoulder slopes and armhole the same as on the back. After the last shoulder decrease, work the remaining 9 sts for another 9 cm = 21 rows for the neckline band. Bind off the stitches.

Right Front: Work the same as the left front, but without buttonholes.

Sleeves: Cast on 52 sts for each sleeve and work in rib for 3 cm = 7 rows for the cuff, starting with 1 purl row, and after the selvage st work 1 knit st. Then work in the cable fancy pattern, distributing the stitches as follows: selvage st, 4 sts between arrows f-a, repeat between arrows a-b 3 times = 42 sts, 4 sts between arrows b-g, selvage st.

For the sleeve shaping, increase on both sides in row 9 (7) from the cuff 1 x 1 st, then every 6th row 8 (7) x 1 st, and every 4th row 11 (14) x 1 st = 92 (96) sts. Work the increases into the pattern on both sides. After 45 cm = 108 rows from the cuff, bind off for the sleeve cap every 2nd row: 1 x 3 (4) sts, 1 x 2 (3) sts, 4 x 2 sts, 4 x 1 st, 1 x 2 sts, 1 x 3 sts, 1 x 4 sts, 1 x 5 sts. On the following 2nd row, bind off the remaining 30 sts.

Finishing: Lightly dampen the pieces, stretch them to the measurements given in the pattern, pin them to the pattern, and let them dry completely. Sew the neckline band to the back neckline. Sew the pocket linings to the wrong side. Sew on the buttons.
