Patterns and Charts
Main Pattern
Working in rounds: work single crochet (sc), starting each round with 1 turning chain instead of the first sc, and finishing with 1 slip stitch (sl st).
Working in a spiral: work sc in rounds, but instead of a slip stitch at the end of each round, continue directly with 1 sc.
To double 1 stitch, work 2 sc into the same base stitch.
Gauge
20 sc = 10 cm, worked in the main pattern with space-dyed yarn using a 3.5 mm hook.
Instructions
With the space-dyed yarn, using a 3.5 mm hook, make a starting chain of 4 ch and join into a ring with 1 sl st. Then work the main pattern in rounds as follows: Round 1: 6 sc into the ring, Round 2: double every stitch = 12 sc,
Round 3: double every 2nd stitch = 18 sc. Continue working in a spiral: Round 4: double every 3rd stitch = 24 sc, Round 5: double every 4th stitch = 30 sc, Rounds 6-21: continue in pattern, working 6 increases in each round = 126 sc. The piece measures about 9.5 cm in height.
Continue working straight without increases to a height of 36 cm, then work the drawstring casing as follows:
Round 1: evenly double 2 sts = 128 sts,
Round 2: *12 sc, 4 ch, skip 4 sts, repeat from *,
Round 3: work 1 sc into each sc and each chain = 128 sc,
Round 4: double 1 st = 129 sc.
Continue working on all 129 sts until the total height is 42 cm.
Finishing
Work an edging around the top of the bag with the blue yarn using a 5 mm hook as follows: *1 sc, 1 ch, skip 2 sts, repeat from *, finish with 1 sl st.
For the cord, cut two blue strands 4 m long each and twist them into a cord. Tie a knot at each end of the cord, then thread the cord through the casing twice and tie the ends together in a knot on the wrong side.
