Crocheting and Assembling the Dress

Description

The dress is made using the complex technique of assembled lace, which is nearly impossible to copy exactly, so every piece made this way is unique. Each crafter has her own thread tension, her own imagination, and different model sizes. For this version, the sizes are given on the pattern schematic, and you will need about 210 different motifs, crocheted from charts 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. If you like, you can create a few new motifs of your own and design your own composition. Make a full-size pattern of the pieces to your own measurements out of heavy paper. Crochet the number of different motifs you need according to the charts provided. Arrange the motifs on the pattern so that they fill the entire pattern area. Fill any gaps with small “circle” motifs. Lay them out with the right side facing down. Baste them to the paper. Now join the motifs into one piece of fabric using a needle (sew them together). Remove the finished pieces from the pattern. All motifs are joined in the round to avoid side seams.

Finishing

To shape the neckline, the front décolletage, and the back, crochet 4 strips of motifs from chart 1, joining them by two petals each while working the last round (the joining points are shown on the chart). Each strip has its own purpose. One is the length of the neck circumference and is made of 11 motifs, forming an arc. One is for finishing the back neckline and is made of 28 motifs, also forming an arc. Two strips are for the bodice straps and are made of 2 motifs each. Sew the strips to the base of the dress. Work one round of single crochet around their edges, easing them in to fit your figure. Using your imagination, decorate the piece with beads, sewing them into the centers of the “flower” motifs. Sew a button onto one end of the strip that forms the neckline, and use the open space of the lace (in this case, the center of a motif) as the buttonhole loop on the other end.
