If you have some free time and a desire to make something interesting and educational for your child, creating a soft felt quiet book (also known as a busy book) is a wonderful idea. Each page of such a book can be decorated in the most incredible ways to help develop your toddler’s fine motor skills—using zippers, laces, buttons, and little pockets.
In this tutorial, I want to show you how to make an interactive page featuring colorful balloons that attach with snap buttons. This is a fun and engaging way for kids to learn colors and practice snapping!
How to Make the Balloon Page:
First, you need to cut out six colorful balloons from craft felt. Sew thin ribbons to the bottom of each balloon, matching the colors if possible. Next, sew one half of a metal or plastic snap button to the back of each felt balloon.
The second half of the snap buttons must be sewn onto your fabric base where the balloons will eventually be placed. Now, these balloons can be easily attached and detached from the page, allowing your child to look at them, sort them by color, and actively play with them.
It is best to sew the main fabric background onto a slightly larger piece of sturdy fabric in a contrasting color—this will serve as the actual page base of your quiet book.
By using this simple technique, you can create a wide variety of engaging, interactive pages for your little one’s sensory book!
