In Eastern countries, smoking tobacco has become a ritual that helps people relax, find peace, and enjoy their time. The first device designed to make smoke softer, cooler, and infused with various aromas was invented in India. In European countries, this Eastern novelty appeared in the 19th century. Today, it is frequently seen at parties and business meetings, and the process itself is considered a trendy and prestigious activity.

Plastic Bottle Hookah
https://youtube.com/watch?v=lSZ0D_pJjVQ
When you quickly need a smoking device, you can use the video recorded for the “Lifehacks” channel as a guide. The creator briefly demonstrates the assembly process using a large plastic bottle. Additionally, you will need: foil, a tube, a hose, an aluminum Coca-Cola can, and the top part of another smaller bottle. Your tools will be a hot glue gun, a soldering iron, a toothpick, and a small saw.
Tin Can Hookah

If you don’t have a plastic container on hand, a tin can will work perfectly as a base. Using a drill, make 2 holes in it. The first hole is for inserting the hose you will use to inhale the smoke. The second hole is for the tube connecting the base to the top part, which is made from half of another tin can. Tobacco and hot charcoal, separated by a thin layer of aluminum foil, are placed inside.
Fruit Bowl (Fruit Head)
The video on the “Double Apple” channel shows how to create a hookah bowl (chilim) from a regular apple. All the necessary information is provided in the subtitles. First, remove the core and carve out a depression in the cut fruit. Next, place a rolled-up “snail” made of foil at the bottom of the fruit cup. Before packing the tobacco, it is highly recommended to squeeze it to remove excess liquid. A piece of foil with poked holes, secured by toothpicks, will serve as the lid.
Glass Jar Hookah

A standard glass jar can serve as an excellent base. First, you’ll need to make 3 holes in the lid using an awl, screwdriver, or drill: one for the downstem (a stainless steel tube), one for the purge valve, and one for the hose. To seal the gaps, you can use 2 rubber grommets. The host of the “Hookah King” blog creatively assembled a purge valve out of a disposable mouthpiece, a drinking straw, and a small toy plastic bullet. He then placed ice, water, and food coloring into the jar for a beautiful tint, packed a silicone bowl with a smoking mixture, and placed it on top of the hookah.
Hookah from Scrap Materials
This masterclass from the “MAGYOM” video blog will help you build a unique device using random items that almost any guy can find in a workshop or garage. These items can include a water filter, a chess king, a cracked mug, and a brass fitting. The mug becomes the bowl. The cut and polished section of the brass tube turns into the downstem. A decorative element from an old chandelier acts as the connector. For the base, you’ll need a custom stand, which can be made from a bicycle sprocket, welding electrodes, and a piece of pipe. If you grind down the chess piece and add threading, you’ll get a great mouthpiece. Finally, all the parts are assembled together.
Fast and Affordable Hookah
It is quite easy to put together a smoking device using a 3-liter glass jar, a hose, foil, and an apple, as shown in the video tutorial on the “Vlad _” YouTube channel. You will need to remove the core from the fruit. Make 3 holes in a melon, and build a “grid” of toothpicks inside the apple. You can increase the thickness of the smoke by using a little glycerin. This guide is perfect for those who appreciate concise instructions—every step is clearly demonstrated, and the key points are explained via text comments.
DIY Watermelon Base
This video demonstrates how to create a hookah base out of a watermelon. First, you need to cut a hole in the giant berry and use a hand mixer to blend the inner pulp. Pour out some of the resulting thick liquid, and dilute the rest with water. Then, insert the parts of a classic hookah into the watermelon. An apple, carved into a cone shape, will act as a seal and holder for the shaft and the bowl.
Banana Hookah
A quick tutorial from the “PointArt Blog” will show you how to build a smoking device quickly, simply, and with virtually no money, using a banana as the primary material. You need to cut it into 2 pieces. The larger piece acts as the water chamber, and the smaller one becomes the bowl for the hot charcoal. This option is great for home use or a party—you can offer each guest their own individual mini-hookah. It’s not only a fun gimmick but also a great way to maintain hygiene.
Glass Bottle Hookah
For this project, you will need a flat 0.5-liter glass bottle. The most difficult step is drilling a hole into one of the bottle’s upper “shoulders” to insert a rubber grommet. The entire crafting process is thoroughly shown in the video by the “Draki stop ham” channel. Every step is accompanied by clear photos of the work and is very intuitive—anyone can replicate it. The on-screen text provides the exact measurements of all the parts and the actions performed by the author.
Cup Hookah
If you are hosting a party, every guest can have their own personal hookah made from a standard plastic or glass drinking cup. This method requires no real financial investment, and the assembly takes just a few steps:
- First – prepare an orange. To push through the drinking straw that will act as the downstem, you can use a wooden chopstick.
- Packing the tobacco. A small piece of wire dish-washing sponge can be used as a mesh to prevent tobacco from falling into the straw.
- Insert the straw and attach an additional rim made of foil.
- Apply hot coals and start smoking.
These compact, homemade devices are great to take on trips, to picnics, or to quickly build on the spot. However, please remember to follow strict safety precautions when using them, especially regarding hot coals.
