Stitch Patterns and Charts

Main Stitch Pattern

Work in single crochet (sc), starting each row with 3 ch instead of the first double crochet (dc).

For each increase, work 2 dc into one base stitch; for each decrease, work 2 dc together.

Filet Pattern

Number of stitches is a multiple of 6 + 2 sts.

Row 1: 3 ch (= 1st dc), * 3 dc, 3 ch, skip 3 sts, repeat from *, end with 1 dc.

Repeat Row 1 continuously, starting each row with 3 ch instead of the first dc and ending with a dc in the chain space of the previous row.

Flowers and Leaves

Work according to Charts A and B.

Gauge

41 sts x 14 rows = 10 x 10 cm, worked in filet pattern.

Instructions

Front of Bag

With cream yarn, chain 110 sts and work 20 rows in filet pattern. Then work 4 more rows in main pattern, working 1 dc into each dc and 2 dc into each chain space in the 1st row.

Back of Bag

Work as for the front.

Side Panel

With cream yarn, chain 10 sts and work in main pattern as follows:

Rows 1-3: dc,

Row 4: increase 1 st on both sides = 12 dc,

Rows 5-7: dc,

Row 8: work as Row 4 = 14 dc,

Rows 9-11: dc,

Rows 77-80: dc,

Row 81: work as Row 61 = 10 dc,

Rows 82-84: dc.

Roses

With pink yarn, make 10 flowers.

Start with a magic ring and work in rounds following Chart A. Instead of the 1st stitch of each round, work a chain, and end each round with 1 slip stitch. To move up to Rounds 4, 6, and 8, work 3 or 4 ch as appropriate, see chart. In the last round, join 5 flowers at one petal with 1 slip stitch to form a strip.

Leaves

With light gold yarn, make 12 leaves. For each leaf, start at the arrow with a chain of 10 + 1 ch and work following Chart B back and forth as indicated by the arrows.

Handles

Work all handles in cream yarn.

Make the top part twice. For this, chain 6 sts and work 140 rows in main pattern.

Make the bottom part 4 times. For this, chain 6 sts and work 12 rows in main pattern.

Cover the 4 rings with 45 sc.

Preparation

Carefully block all crocheted pieces and spray generously with a protective fabric spray to guard against soiling.

Finishing

First join the front and back of the bag to the side panel. Place pieces exactly together and join with cream yarn using reverse single crochet (= work sc from left to right).

Along the top edge of the front and back of the bag, fold 2 small pleats 9 cm from the side edges so that the circumference of the top edge equals 24 cm.

Sew 6 leaves in pairs onto the front and back of the bag, 2 cm from the top edge. Sew the roses evenly on top, and sew 1 bead into the center of each flower, see photo.

Thread the bottom parts of the handles through the rings to form loops. Join the ends with reverse single crochet in light gold yarn. Sew the bottom parts of the handles to the front and back of the bag, 3 cm from the side edges. Thread each top handle piece through both rings and sew the short ends together. Work reverse single crochet in light gold yarn around all edges of the bottom handle pieces held together.

Bag Lining

Only half of the lining pattern is given; complete it as a mirror image along the dashed line (= double it). Trace the pattern onto tissue paper and cut out.

Reinforce the lining in the area of the front, back, and bottom with interfacing. Cut the interfacing once according to the pattern and iron it onto the wrong side of the silk. Mark the bottom of the bag. Trim the interfacing exactly to the edge, leaving a 1 cm seam allowance along the top edges. Stitch the edges of the bottom, wrong sides together, to the edge. Press the seam allowances to the wrong side and topstitch. Overcast the outer edges.

Cut the silk according to the pattern with 1 cm seam allowances, mark the bottom. For the side panels, cut 2 strips measuring 7.5 x 17.5 cm. Trim the long edges diagonally on both sides so that the top short side measures only 5 cm. Overcast all pieces.

Sew the side panels into the lining and press the seam allowances along the top edge to the wrong side.

Now place the lining into the interfaced piece with wrong sides together, pin the top edges flush, and sew. Press the seam allowances of the side panels onto the interfacing and baste. Sew the side panels along the seam line by hand with small stitches.

Attach the magnetic snap pieces in the center. Finally, insert the lining fully into the bag and sew the top edge by hand with invisible stitches. If desired, also join the “seams” of the crocheted bag to the lining.
